Fighting rabies

This morning as I drove to Mpyupyu School, I noticed lots of dogs, on leads, (this itself an unusual sight) all travelling with their owners in the same direction as me. It looked like the dogs were going to school.
The mystery was solved when I got there as I found representatives from Mission Rabies, an international charity at Mpyupyu School, ready to immunise the dogs against rabies. It seems that just one injection sorts the dogs out for life. As a team they travel the area returning to each location on an annual basis to catch up with any dogs born within the previous 12 months.
In 2017 Mission Rabies, in Malawi vaccinated 98,761 dogs and educated 453,785 children about rabies.
Mission Rabies invites short term volunteers from across the world to join them in their programmes in India, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Uganda as well as Malawi. Sounds like an interesting GAP experience
